There is quite a bit of paperwork involved in a Service Academy online Application.
What?
Yes, the online application is just the start. There are paper Recommendations, transcripts, Police Background checks, etc. You should be able to track your application and correspondence online. So what to do with all the MAIL?
1) Copy everything! Copy the blank pages. Copy the filled out pages. Keep copies.
2) Record everything! Date rec'd. Date submitted. Everything. It is VERY common for there to be weeks if not months in delay in showing correspondence rec'd. Does that reflect well on the Academy? No. Does it matter? Well, if you do not follow up, who's fault is it, ultimately?
3) Mail everything with SOME SORT of tracking. I don't care what system you use. Use it and then plug it into the records and copies.
Finally...
4) Be ready to re-submit everything! What? After being so careful, why do that? It isn't YOUR fault, right? You have PROOF you sent it!
READ THIS CAREFULLY.
You are leaving the cozy world where everybody has rights. There is a safe, happy, bubblewrapped world where you can point and blame and threaten to sue if things don't go your way. You are pretty much there now, and you are welcome to stay there. If you CHOOSE to move on, you have to act like it. In the application process you may come against a situation where the Academy reports not having paperwork that you have submitted. What to do?
You can do what most people do, and by most people, I do include a lot of parents. You can point, blame, raise your voice, insult, and accuse. Happens every year.
You can calmly resubmit the paperwork (you have copies) by FAX, and the copies to be mailed shortly with a follow-up call.
You choose. I take that back. You can choose if you are ready. If you have not taken precautions, you will be scrambling and may be eliminated because of lost paperwork. Paperwork YOU did not lose. It is rare, but it does happen. So how much effort are you willing to expend?
All of these points are just as applicable to the NOMINATION paperwork and process.
