Service Academy Summer Seminar
The Summer Seminar rush is on!  What is it and what you should do TODAY...

If you don't know what Summer Seminar is or why you should be interested, you are in good company.  Many and by some accounting MOST applicants do not know about the Summer Seminar programs and what they can mean to you.

Who, What, Why, Where, When, and HOW?

Who can apply?  The following are general guidelines for who they are looking for...

Usually they are targeting those just finishing as a junior in HS.

  • Unmarried, not pregnant and have no legal obligation to support a child, children or other individual(s);
  • Superior high school performance to include: GPA, class standing, and/or strong PSAT, SAT, or ACT results;
  • Demonstrated achievement in athletics and extracurricular activities, especially demonstrating leadership potential in these areas;
  • Physically fit and in good health with normal vision (20/40 or correctable to 20/20);
Positive attitude, self-disciplined, and of good moral character.

WHAT is it?
  Summer Seminar is a 5-6 day training program for interested  students held at the respective Academy.  USNA, USMA, USAFA, and USCGA all have Summer Seminars (although they all have their own acronyms).  USMMA does NOT have a Summer Seminar.
  Classes are combined with physical fitness training.  Mission, Honor, careers, and academics are all covered on the campus where they will attend, living in the same dorms where they will live.

WHY have it?
   The Service Academies, on top of being among the Toughest Schools In the WORLD, are looking for top students willing to serve their country.  Now there are plenty of top students, and plenty willing to serve, it is the combination that is hard to figure.  How to get the ideal student?  Well, the Application to tough.  The screening and interview process extensive.  And yet, evey year there are students who quit the first day.  This year at least one Academy had a quitter in the first 6 hours.  This program gives a short peek at the some of the stressors you will face.  Hopefully it will lock in your desire to attend.  Evey year there are some who attend and who KNOW that getting up early, running laps, shooting weapons and an obstacle course are NOT a life they want any part of.  In BOTH these ways, the Summer Seminars are a great success.

Where?
   At the respective Service Academy.  Again USMMA does  not participate because their program is truly all year and there is no real break to conduct additional training.

When?
  June and July.  5-6 day programs.  Each program is a bit different.  Application info can be a little mysterious, as the start times are sometimes not announced.  Bookmark and RSS link (and register) this website for the latest.  The latest is...
  US Air Force Academy Summer Seminar Applications have begun.
  USMA /West Point Summer Seminar (SLS) Applications will start "Mid December 2009".
  US Coast Guard Academy (AIM) Applications will start "in January 2010"
  Annapolis/ US Naval Academy (NASS) Applications begin "01 February 2010"

How is this a big deal?
   Ah, the best question is always the last.  So you are busy in the summer, or you know all about the Academy, or you don't think you'll need it, or whatever.  All excellent points.
  From the situation if you are a blue chip athlete who needs to attend a summer sports camp all the way to needing to work each summer for money to support your family and everything in between, there are many good reasons not to attend a Summer Seminar.  It doesn't matter.
  You only get some credit for attending.  And only a small fraction of those that apply even get an invitation.  What is the big deal and HOW does this effect you?
   WHEN YOU APPLY FOR A SUMMER SEMINAR, several things happen...
  • You've show early interest
  • You have taken an action
  • You have a file opened before all others
  • Your application alone gives you points helping your application
  • The application points work whether you attend, are not invited, or are invited and decline.
All these actions refect well on you and your possible future success.  APPYING SCORES POINTS!
  So, Summer Seminar.  You understand the basic outline.  Apply now if possible.  EVEN IF YOU KNOW NOW YOU CANNOT ATTEND, apply for the Summer Seminar.  You can apply to more than one and attend more than one program.

Good Luck!

Summer Air Force Academy Sessions for 2011
My daughter plans on attending the Air Force Academy out of High School. We have met twice with our state rep and she is dead set on going. I just found out about the summer sessions and program. However, I would love more info and cost of it as we live in Wisconsin. She will be a junior this year and the program would fit her perfectly. She would like to go into astronautical engineering. Thank you for your time.
