December Action List With a Service Academy Application
My application is submitted and Nomination interview complete.  Am I done yet?

This is an interesting time in the Service Academy Application Process.  Usually you have submitted all your paperwork, Nomination efforts are complete, and it is simply a waiting game.  Now MOST people consider waiting to be a form of sitting back and letting the game play out.
Waiting Room.  Waiting Game.  Waiting to exhale.  Waiting for Godot.

While "waiting equals staying still" is overwhelmingly true, this is yet ANOTHER area where you can prove that you are not like MOST people.  Do you think the Academy wants MOST people?  What to do?
The United States Merchant Marine Academy, while one of the newer Service Academies, has what anyone would admit is the best motto... "ACTA NON VERBA".

   Action not Words!

This is what ALL the Academies look for.  It is also what few of the many applicants provide.  So, the question is, "What would you do for a $400,000 scholarship?".  People say "anything", but then they do nothing.  Does that make sense?
After all the paperwork is complete, what can happen?  Well, here are some examples...

You can be asked to re-take and re-submit the fitness exam.
You can submit additional SAT and ACT scores to update your Academics.
You can add leadership/ECA/ Sports achievements to your resume
You can KEEP WORKING and update your Liaison Officer with improvements.

You can ACT!
If you ARE asked to resubmit the CFA or PFE, you will only have a couple of weeks.  Probably in the winter.  What does it mean when your score is lower?  I know it SEEMS like you only missed a chance to add some points.  The truth is that you are/were being looked at (good) and they are looking to add some points whereever possible (Bad in this case, since the points aren't there).  A lower score also shows that your fitness level is not exactly what it seems.

Re-take the exams that you can.   Improve.  SAT and ACT.  It gives you another way to demonstrate effort and to contact your Liaison Officer.

Did we talk about this being a job interview?  It is.  It is perfectly appropriate to send updates and "Thank-You" notes to your interviewers.  This includes your Liaison Officer and Congressional Nomination board members if you were interviewed.  Just a few words and a signature with enough information to identify you.  Get help and sound professional.  "Thanks alot, love, Bob" ain't gonna cut it.

Service Academy Admissions is an interesting and misunderstood process.  Over 20% of the incoming class is coming from an Academy sanctioned Prep School.  Are you making every effort to be considered for every opportunity to apply?

So get out and run a mile.  Workout 3 times a week.  Get a book for SAT prep from the library.  Participate in a charity drive, school fundraiser, Do SOMETHING!

Acta Non Verba!
